The below is a community member's testimony. Feel free to use it, something of your own, or something as simple as "I support LD 542, and it "ought to pass." To get other wording ideas, as online testimony is submitted for this bill, you can see it here: https://legislature.maine.gov/ctl/SLG/03-17-2025?panel=0&time=0&sortdir=0&sortby=2 after clicking on the bill number.
I support LD 542 “An Act Regarding Municipal Property Tax Levy Limits.”
This bill establishes municipal property tax levy limits and allows for those limits to be exceeded only under certain specified circumstances.
Per the “Maine Wire” article dated Feb 18, 2025: “Most notably, Maine taxpayers have the highest property tax burden — and the fourth highest tax burden overall — when the amount owed to the government is taken as a percentage of residents’ personal income.”
I feel this bill, when enacted into law, would help to safeguard us property owners from municipal governments who wish to increase our property tax burden to an unsustainable amount.
I support LD542”, and it “ought to pass.”
