Support for Moratorium on Offshore Wind Farms

Published on 14 January 2025 at 20:00

In this letter, we express our support for President-elect Donald Trump’s call for a moratorium on offshore wind farms in Maine. We highlight concerns about the impact on Maine’s scenic coastline, tourism, and lobster fishing industry, which generated over $464 million in 2023. Additionally, we address the environmental risks, including potential harm to marine life and ecosystems, as well as safety concerns following turbine failures like the one in Nantucket. The high costs of offshore wind projects and the risk of inefficient energy solutions further justify a pause for thorough assessment. We urge our community to stay engaged as we prepare additional resources to help you take action.

Dear Pine Tree Patriots,

We are writing to express our support for President-elect Donald Trump's recent call for a moratorium on offshore wind farms in Maine. This decision aligns with our commitment to preserving our state's natural beauty, supporting local industries, and ensuring responsible environmental stewardship.

Maine's coastline is one of our greatest assets, renowned for its scenic beauty which supports tourism and enhances the quality of life for residents. Offshore wind farms, with their towering structures, pose a significant threat to this aesthetic. They could mar the pristine views that many enjoy and rely upon for their livelihoods, particularly in the tourism sector.

The fishing industry, notably lobster fishing, is central to Maine's economy and cultural identity. In 2023, Maine's lobster industry was worth $464,371,720.  The installation of wind farms could disrupt traditional fishing grounds, potentially leading to a reduction in fish stocks and access issues for fishermen. A moratorium gives our legislators time to study the long-term impacts on marine life and fishing practices, ensuring these industries aren't unduly harmed.  Furthermore, it gives us the time to demand a solution from them.

While wind energy is often championed as clean, the construction and maintenance of offshore wind farms have environmental impacts that are not fully understood. There are concerns about noise pollution affecting marine mammals, potential damage to seabed ecosystems, and the overall ecological balance in the Gulf of Maine. A pause allows for more comprehensive environmental impact assessments to be conducted, ensuring that we do not compromise our marine environment in the name of renewable energy.

An alarming example of the potential environmental impact was witnessed in Nantucket, where a wind turbine blade failure resulted in debris scattered across the beaches. This incident not only poses a direct threat to marine life and local ecosystems but also raises questions about the safety and reliability of these structures. If one turbine can cause such visible damage, what might multiple failures do? This incident underscores the need for a more thorough assessment of the environmental risks involved.

The costs associated with offshore wind projects are significant, from initial investment to ongoing maintenance. These expenditures could be better directed toward other forms of energy or infrastructure that might provide more immediate benefits to Maine residents. This could include work to update aging homes and heat sources. Furthermore, the moratorium could prevent locking our state into a potentially inefficient or overly costly energy solution.

In conclusion, we stand with President-elect Trump in advocating for a thoughtful pause on the development of offshore wind farms. This moratorium will allow us to understand the implications better, protect our local industries, and maintain the natural beauty and integrity of our coast.

In the coming days, we hope to provide you with a more complete letter to assist in submitting to your representative, family, and friends.
